When Sales and Production Meet Projects - Make-to-Order Projects

Here is another area where SAP project management excels (apart from a few shortcomings). Managing complex Make-to-order Projects with Primavera alone simply cannot work. There simply are too many integration touch points with the production planning system (in SAP: PP module) or with the sales system (in SAP: SD module). On the other hand there still are areas where the integration of SAP with Primavera can add clear benefits to the process.

Some of the SAP's shortcomings are the usual ones (i.e., user friendliness, integration with vendor systems). Among some of SAP's idiosyncrasies in this process are the lacking integration between the PP (production planning) module and PS (project system). Without modifying the SAP system or using an external scheduling system that triggers such updates, it is not possible to drive production order dates from the schedule, or to have costs and quantities roll up across both modules.

6. How open is your technology?

It is so easy to say "yes" and "we are open" - but what does that mean? You may want to get more specific and try to find out what that really means.

Are you using any proprietary technology that is not open? Do you support all Java/J2EE compliant web application servers (like WebLogic, WebSphere, Tomcat, NetWeaver)? Can you please name all programming languages you used to build your application?

Questions like these should flush out your real support needs, risk and potential vendor dependency.
