One common theme of enterprise projects is that they are complex. Complexity can come in due to the sheer size of projects (dozens of WBS elements and thousands of activities), a multitude of technical systems and tools (SAP, Primavera, MS Project, Excel, Maximo, etc), locations (sites across time zones and countries), or purely based on the number of players (e.g., project team members, workers, contractors, suppliers).
Complexity is best being countered by striving for simplicity. Processes and systems need to be defined in a highly logical and consistent, but also comprehensive manner. Standards need to be set and people trained according to them. The result is a reduction in reconciliation and coordination effort, and higher productivity.
