SAP-Centric Projects

Designing genuine enterprise project management solutions is more than simply using a set of tools. Due to the integrated nature of SAP and its wealth of functionality there always are decisions to be made on how to use the combination of tools available by SAP (see more below about SAP project management functionality). Additionally, it is SAP's intention to cover business processes comprehensively instead of simply being a tool to help with individual people's challenges.  

The following points should be considered when attempting to build powerful SAP-Centric projects (see more details here): 

1. 1.    Divide the project processes into 3 layers: Enterprise Layer, Project Layer, Contractor Layer. 
2. 2.    Systems are more important than people.
3. 3.    Simplicity is key to make complex processes work.
4. 4.    Keep SAP in the center - it is overall more important than any single project management system (at least in almost all circumstances).
5. 5.    Processes are key, not technologies.
6. 6.    Address project management functions separate for each one of the enterprise project layers.
7. 7.    Keep one single system of record for each functional area.
8. 8.    Keep theoretical standards like the PMBOK in mind, but do not expect one tool to cover all knowledge areas or formal functions.
